Mission Accomplished

Miners Monument dedicated September 7, 2015

On Labor Day, Monday September 7, 2015 thousands of people gathered together to witness the unveiling of the Miners Monument in Price, Utah.  The monument was the thoughts and dreams of Dennis Ardohain and Frank Markosek.  They felt like the coal miners of Carbon County needed to be remembered for their sacrifice and dedication to their families and mining industry.  They formed a committee to create this beautiful work of art and began working towards that goal.  I had the opportunity to serve on that committee and to help with the research for the miners names who would appear on the plaques.

The plaques on the monument contain the names of 1350 miners who died in Carbon County coal mines due to accident.  One miner, Abza Ruebin Tucker, didn't get added to the list until the plaques were in the process of being made.  His name will be added to the monument at a later date.

We all know and love a coal miner.   Fathers, grand-fathers, uncles, cousins and nephews have worked in the mines their whole lives without a coal mine accident.  Following their retirement from the mines they have developed black lung or some other health issue related to the mining industries.  All these miners are remembered on the monument also.

I'm grateful for the opportunity I have had to work with all the committee members who diligently and successfully accomplished their part in the creation of this memorial.
