Thanksgiving Day
My Thanksgiving Day started out pretty much as any of my past Thanksgiving Days. My first task of the day is to get the turkey cooking in the oven. Having accomplished that task I started on the second task of the day and that was to feed the dog and the cats. I went to the back porch, filled two cups full of animal food and proceeded to very cautiously go down the ramp. It had been a very cold night and morning so the ramp was wet and icy. I had only taken a few, very, very small steps when my feet went flying up in front of me. I could tell it wasn't going to be a good landing and I screamed, twice, very loudly. The way I remember it the back of my head hit first followed by my back. Then I went sliding down the ramp to the concrete at the bottom. I wasn't a happy little camper.
The next thing I knew was my son Robert coming to my rescue. He expressed his concern and extended a hand to help me up. I declined the hand for a minute. My head was still busy going around in circles. When the world stopped spinning I reached for his hand and cautioned him to pull slowly. I spent the next hour or more with a bag of ice on the back of my head and checked my eyes, every so often, to make sure they didn't show signs of a concussion.
After some pain pills and some time, I was able to complete my Thanksgiving tasks. It has now been a week since this experience and my back and head are feeling much better. The head only hurts when I touch it so I try to avoid touching it. It does make it complicated to wash my hair though. However, the stomach muscles hurt worse than the back and head. Do you know how many times a day you use your stomach muscles? They still hurt when I roll over in bed, put my shoes on and sneeze!!
Through all the pain I still count my blessings. If you look at the photograph of my sweet little Brayden sliding down the ramp on the sled you can see the 4" lip on the side of the ramp. My head was only inches from that lip. If my head had landed on it I would have spent the rest of my Thanksgiving Day in the emergency room getting stitches or even something worse. If I hadn't been able to scream on my way down I could have laid there for a long time without anyone coming to look for me. Who knows how long I could have been there. Even the dog was more concerned about the dog food that had been scattered all over the sidewalk. He didn't even bark or pay any attention to the fact that I was laying on the ground.
It was a day to be Thankful.
Black Friday Shopping
On Friday (after the major crowds were gone) I went shopping with Cassie and Brayden. Since I was an invalid, Cassie was pushing the cart and dealing with Brayden. I was just along for the walk. It didn't hurt to walk but just don't bend, twist, stoop, pick up grandson or sneeze and life was okay. Occasionally, I would stray away from the cart and stroll down a different aisle out of sight. It was so cool to hear my little Brayden hollering, "Grandma, Grandma, Grandma, Grandma, Grandma" until I reappeared. It is sooooooo fun to be a Grandma!!!
