First some background information...
My goal in this adventure was to hopefully find information about my Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather Sullivan. Grandpa James Edward Sullivan was born July 4, 1879 to James and Mary Sullivan. He was orphaned in 1888 or 1889 and went to live with his Uncle Sheehan or Shehan in Indiana. Uncle Sheehan owned a construction company and built roads and canals.
Now, on with the story.
So, we sent this DNA sample to Ancestry.com and they compare the results to their other millions of sample and send you a large list of databases of others that have the same DNA markers. They don't tell you the relatives name or story just simply that you have the same DNA. I received the results back this week so I looked at the first database on the list. It had a total of 72 names and only five surnames. The surnames were Fisher, Gurr, McLaughlin, Monson and Olson. None of these surnames are on my database so I looked at all the details and places the people lived and seen some of them in Minnesota so just decided that must be where we tie together.
I looked at the second database and it had over 4300 names in it and hundreds of surnames. I surveyed the names and tried to find someone in common. I didn't see any similar but I do need to check closer. What I did find was the surname McLaughlin? What are the possibilities of that? All these McLaughlins are in Ohio. There Is Edward McLaughlin, Mary, William,Sarah, Mary Ann, James, and Daniel.
I have a million questions now about this McLaughlin family. How am I related to them? Was Mary's last name McLaughlin? Does McLaughlin tie in another generation back? Or is it totally unrelated to my side of the family and does it tie into Vans side of the family somewhere? If it isn't McLaughlin how do I tie into these two databases?
I didn't get much sleep last night. If I was asleep I was clicking the mouse and if I was awake I was dreaming about McLaughlins. Updates to follow.
