Fred Cole AKA James Edward Sullivan

In my last post over a year and a half ago I mentioned the DNA search for my Grandfather James Edward Sullivan.  My cousin, Dianne, and I have spent hours and hours combining almost 1400 AncestryDNA Family Tree matches and finally came to the conclusion that James S. Cole, (1839-1912) and Mary Catherine Myers (1852-1920) are our great-grandparents.  When James S. Cole died in 1912 his obituary said he had three living sons, Fred, John and Carl Cole.  Family Trees showed us the wives and children of Carl and John Cole so that left Fred to be our Grandfather.

With further research into Fred Cole we find that he was in the army in San Francisco at the same time as our Grandfather says he was there.  He served in the army from January 1,  1908 to April 3, 1912.  James Edward Sullivan claimed to have served in the military for 4 years, 3 months and 3 days which is the exact amount of time that Fred Cole's records show.  The physical descriptions of Fred Cole and James Edward Sullivan are within 1/4 of an inch in being exactly the same.  We believe that Fred Cole was released from the army on April 3, 1912 and on September 9, 1916 he was James Edward Sullivan and married our grandmother.  We'd love to learn what caused him to change his name.  We don't believe our Grandmother ever knew he had changed his name.
