QR Codes

A few weeks ago I attended a Family History Conference sponsored by the Utah Genealogical Association that was held at the Salt Lake Community College. While there,  I learned about one of the new and interesting things happening in family history work.  The QR code.  The QR code is short for Quick Response Codes.  For a fee, companies are putting the stories or memorials of your ancestors online and then placing the URL of the website into a QR code.  This code is then etched into a small piece of steel, glass, aluminum, porcelain or vinyl and given to the purchaser.  It will depend upon which supplier you choose to use as to what size and shape your tile is.  The purchaser then takes this etched tile to the cemetery and places it on the headstone of their loved one.  Anyone else visiting that headstone scans the QR code with their smart phone and can go to the website and view the memorial or read the stories online about that individual.  I found it a pretty interesting concept but a little over priced for my budget.

You can read more about this project in this Deseret News story: QR Codes can 'expand the experience' of genealogists

Here are a couple URL to different companies that provide this service.  I do not endorse either company and have not done business with either one.
